sorry my original posting lacked clarity. There's no reinstall. I booted the 
ubuntu live cd to use gparted. I installed solaris in the first partition so 
that the old grub solaris uses is there. As long as your partiioning 
corresponds to the chainload parameters, and solaris' grub lands in the MBR, 
everything _should_ be fine. 


In a further stab at answering your question, unless it's in the first 
partition, you don't need to reinstall ubuntu. Solaris' grub I think really 
wants to be in the mbr.

Another reason I took this route is it seemed less effort to get grub to 
chainload grub2 than the other way 'round. Somebody with better grub expertise 
might choose othewise.
