This sound very similar to my problem.

I have a mirrored boot disk on an AMD64 platform.

I performed a pkg --auto-update (can not remember the command), I believe it
installed to packages.

Rebooted.

Grub load gives the menu boots from "Solaris-1".

Gets the splash screen up and sits there for a while (I assume it times out
looking for something), no disk activity.
Reboots, repeats.

Booted from original "OpenSolaris 2009.06" successfully.

Tried updating using the update manager. Installed 2 packages. Rebooted from
"Solaris-2"

failed in the same way as above, tried removing the Splash screen. justs gets a
cursor in the top left and eventually reboots the same.

This time I tried to reboot from the original as "OpenSolaris 2009.06" and it
fails in the same way. I think that this may have been because I turned on
timeslider.

Note: The rpool is a partition on the disk not the whole disk.

Sorry to msknight, no solution from me.
