Could be all sort of things.

Did you already had a look at "top" / "prstat" /
"mpstat 5" output?  Is there any process or the kernel
consuming too much cpu time?

Or is it the disk?  Does "iostat -xnc 5" report
a significant amount of disk activity?

No, there shouldn't be any extra logging in the dev
builds.  Should be compiled as "release" bits,
exactly like the final 2009-06 or 2010-03 release.
