Just adding dns to the nsswitch.conf is not enough. You need to restart the name-service-cache daemon whenever a change is made to nsswitch.conf. This step is critical. svcadm restart system/name-service-cache:default Also if you have an /etc/resolv.conf then the DNS client should be running. This would normally happen at boot time but you can fire it off if you added it manually.
