Just adding dns to the nsswitch.conf is not enough.   You need to 
restart the name-service-cache daemon whenever a change is made to 
nsswitch.conf.  This step is critical.

svcadm restart system/name-service-cache:default

Also if you have an /etc/resolv.conf then the DNS client should be 
running.  This would normally happen at boot time but you can fire it 
off if you added it manually.  It works without but is should be running.
