You shouldn't need THAT much space on your rpool... how much free do you have?  
Essentially the workaround is a two-step upgrade, instead of a single-step.  
You can go to 128 and destroy your old BE (if 128 works fine) and you should 
have plenty of room.  If not, you probably don't have the space to upgrade at 
all.
