The desktop on OpenSolaris is actually quite poor--usual complaints: lack of drivers and really ugly fonts or lack of good fonts. It's a decent OS for servers though.
You may be better off with Ubuntu on the desktop. I'm not sure what your criteria for the perfect OS are but outside of Windows and OS X, Ubuntu is good distribution for desktops. Apt-get or aptitude--and the fact it works very well--is a very powerful tool on Ubuntu.
