Thank you Thorsten. That appears to have worked (although I can't find it in the svcs list, I've grepped for SUNW, apache and web and can't find it) and even after a reboot, the web service isn't started, or rather isn't responding.
Any ideas please? I'm making a short video on tips, how to keep track of a system at home, by installing a web service and copying some simple log files in to the web root directory ... the more complex/trouble that the web installation is becoming, the more difficult my instructions are going to be for people to follow. That is why simply putting a tick in apache2 in the application list, would have been great. The command you suggested didn't give any error messages in its progress.
