I have just installed opensolaris today and so far i love it. I have never
really used any unix like system before, but i think im getting the hang of
it...

Before i start, i have a radeon 4850X2....

Anyway, there are 2 problems, both display related, that i just can't sort out.
The first is my resolution - I have a 24" monitor with native res of 1920x1200,
but my display is set to 1600x1200, and i can't change it in 'Monitor
Resolution Settings'.

I have tried to follow the instructions from this thread
(http://opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=223774) but with no luck.
running cvt -r 1920 1200 60 and appending the output to the monitor section of
xorg.conf has no effect - the resolution is still 1600x1200 and there are no
new options in Resolution Settings.
Changing the driver from 'vesa' to either 'radeon' or 'radeonhd' results in x
refusing to start, and me having to delete xorg.conf.

The second is very related really, but im afraid the answer will be no. Are
there any better drivers available for my card that would mean that i could at
least stream video or even scroll down a web page without it jittering so
badly? From what i gather ati is not that well supported, and tbh the 4850x2
isnt even that well supported by windows.

If i could get these working i wouldnt think twice about making a full time
switch. If this is not possible with opensolaris, can anyone recommend another
OS, do any of the BSD varieties far any better? Or should i give in and just
go with ubuntu...

Thanks for the help
