I had a similar problem and I think the X server was not configured at install
time for some reason.
After a lot of experiments, I did the following:
1. type Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to stop X;
2. type root and the password for a console login;
3. type /usr/X11/bin/Xorg -configure
All the typing was in the blind, had to be quick (before X started again) and
without errors!
As by magic, the console prompt reappeared and I was able to run
kdmconfig.
This time the configuration was saved properly and (after a reboot) X started
normally.
