I don't know; I build with gcc more than anyone else and I have dmake. I just set __GNUC so that the Studio compilers aren't used. Sure, you can do without the Studio install, but as you point out you'll have to use make. Since make and dmake are available under similar terms (SX and the Studio kit are both binary-only free-use no-redistribution licenses) I don't really see the issue with dmake. The bigger problem is that the source for them is not available, but we're working on that. Remember the reasons for supporting gcc: 1. Code quality improvement and maintenance. 2. Portability to arbitrary future platforms. 3. A fully-redistributable self-hosted environment. Only (3) has anything to do with make or dmake, and neither offers an advantage over the other in that regard.
