I have seen this with early SNV releases (and don't really have any stats on later ones yet) and S10 U1 on a ThinkPad T43 laptop and on a white-box Intel P4 945 chipset box. Both use a SATA interface to the hard drive (although via sata->pata converter on T43).
When it happens, it is on shutdown or boot (or reboot). There will be a pause, then "ata timeout" and usually everything is hosed. If it happens after touching system config it can leave the box unbootable. Sorry for the vagueness of the question but I haven't found a place where I can capture diagnostic information (probably since it can't write to disk there isn't any). And I sort of hope it doesn't happen again anyway :) Thoughts?
