I didn't think it was the capital 'N' in Newton but I gave it a shot. I changed
/etc/hosts, and /etc/hostname.hme0 and I got the same results.

Then I tried:
# ping newton
newton is alive
# telnet newton
Trying ::1...
telnet: connect to address ::1: Network is unreachable
Trying 127.0.0.1...
Connected to localhost.
Escape character is '^]'.
login:
telnet> q
Connection to localhost closed.
#

I'm not sure what the ::1 message are about, but it appears that name
resolution is really having problems. For some reason (in spite of /etc/hosts)
'newton' is actually resolving to 127.0.0.1

Oh damn it.... /etc/inet/ipnodes... Of course!

'Newton' was still on the 'localhost loghost' line in that file from the
install.

Thanks anyway everyone!!!
I knew I should have waited to post the question! :)
