I double-checked through the BIOS; the 6 SATA ports are all configured
with RAID disabled.

And I booted the Knoppix CD and verified that it sees all the disks.
It saw them all, and saw them as individual disks, so I think I've
eliminated cable, bios, and such messups.  (Since 4 drives are ZFS and
2 are unformatted, I didn't do real IO tests under Knoppix; I suppose
I could have tried the two unformatted ones, but really having Linux
see the drives and correctly report the models convinces me the
drivers have found them, so the hardware and bios is all set up some
version of right.)
