Just a wild hunch: what's the output of "locale"? I've seen some programs before now that were well behaved in "C" locale but barfed badly in other locales (I tend to like to use en_US.ISO8859-15 myself, since en_US.UTF-8 can be a bit annoying when one doesn't actually need Unicode support).
