Hello Jaap, I'm cc'ng i18n-discuss mailing list since we have globalization experts in that mailing list and also for the case that this problem is already know (with hopefully resolutions). IIMF folks, please also comment on the following answer from me and also your future migration plan on the gimlet:
I think the compose key issue probably can be resolved if you press and release control and space keys together to get into Latin (English/European) input mode if you've gimlet (GNOME Input Method switvher appLET) at your JDS panel at the bottom of the screen. You can also click on the "En" at the panel, and then, select "English/European" input mode. You will then see "Latin" next to the "En" and you're ready to input compose sequences. If you don't see the gimlet, then, you can start iiim-properties application from a terminal and enable input methods and also configure it to suit your need. You can add gimlet to panel via GUI: click right button at the panel, click on Add to Panel..., scroll down the list and select "InputMethod Switcher" and then click on "Add" button. The gaim crash might be a separate issue and I hope someone else in the mailng list can answer the question.
