Just picked up 5 500Gb SATA drives that I want to set up on my home network.
The goal is to use this as an online backup storage for the machines on my home network. I've been doing a lot of searching on the internet, but things change so quickly that I'm concerned that I'll make a silly mistake. I'm going to connect it to my Sunfire V20Z box. Since the backups will be incremental and performance isn't critical, I'm planning to set it up with zfs as RAID5 or RAID5-2 So, I'm looking at some enclosures and controllers, but I'm getting conflicting information. These looks like sweet, cheap boxes with 4 eSata connectors: http://www.thinkcomputers.org/index.php?x=reviews&id=582 http://www.cooldrives.com/u6-4s-s2-4-bay-sata-enclosure.html Then there are some bigger boxes with multi-lane connectors and/or sata multiplexers built in: http://www.cooldrives.com/firemorasaii.html http://www.pc-pitstop.com/sata_enclosures/scsat05pm.asp But trying to find a controller card to work with these boxes that will have multi-lane or eSata connections to these boxes and run on OpenSolaris Express has been tough. Does anyone have any recommendations? I've heard that the drivers may not deal with multiplexed SATA drives, but this information may be incorrect or out of date. Can anyone shed light on what parameters I need to look for to complete this setup? My head has been spinning trying to figure all this out. Thanks, Gary This message posted from opensolaris.org _______________________________________________ opensolaris-help mailing list [email protected]
