OK, as is the case with noobs like myself, I found the problem about about 5 minutes after this post. I did not have my /etc/nsswitch.conf set up to look at my /etc/resolv.conf for my DNS information. So now I am online with my wireless card and I can start googling for more information.
Is there a handbook like the one for FreeBDS that a noob like myself can read and access as they get used to this new system? Thanks for any suggestions you might have.
