So it appears my instructions (first posting) remain/stand uncorrected. The only other data point appears to suggest that *if* your root disk (not zfs root, as I expect that's different) evaporates, has a "thermal event" :-) or just fails .... Then you replace the drive, re-install the OS, and then 'zpool import -f' your pools.
For a complex system with lots of pools I might take 'zpool status' output and mail it to yourself, to aid the recovery/memory for use in the case of disaster.
