I think the point is that the blastwave packages won't interfere with
or replace system packages; it also means they can have separate
versions of libraries from the system, to satisfy different dependencies.
(This used to mean they could have much newer versions of at least some
applications than one found in SFW or the Companion CD; but that may
well be less true now than it once was.)

It does mean a lot of extra disk space for all the duplicates.  But it is still
a reasonable approach to decoupling delivery of executables from what
Sun provides.

Also keep in mind the problems with licensing or patents on a lot of
codecs (and DVD decryption); a commercial vendor might not be able
to distribute open-source based software that uses these, but depending
on where they operated from, a non-commercial site might be able to
get away with it.

I don't know what the future has to offer on this sort of thing; there
are some gstreamer plugins available commercially from Fluendo, but
AFAIK, that's little help in the area of DVD player programs, for example.
