I am also new to Solaris. Since you have 5 years of experience using
Linux/Unix systems, the learning step should not very steep or difficult
for you.

In fact, I found that the installation of Solaris 10 is much more user
friendly and easy compared to FreeBSD or a Linux distro.

The migration from Linux to Solaris can be compared to changing your
soft drink from Pepsi to Coke!!

You can do almost anything with Solaris which a Linux/Unix distribution
can do. Probably even better with Solaris.

> 2. Solaris and unix are very similar?, have the same aim?

Since Solaris is derived from Unix, yes, Solaris is Unix and Unix is
Solaris.
Regarding the aim, every operating system has the same goal. Run as
stable as possible and produce the best results.

Probably both. But I think Solaris is stronger on the server platform.

 From Wikipedia:

OpenSolaris is an open source project created by Sun Microsystems to
build a developer community around Solaris Operating System technology.

Check it out yourself:

I am just a starter in Solaris myself and I don't know much about
Solaris myself. From my current understanding:

(1.) For serious server stuff, I think Solaris 10 Operating System is
fit for you.

(Free Solaris 10 8/07 download)

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/get.jsp#download

(2.) Or if you like the latest technology and tools, then you should
consider Free Solaris Express Developer Edition which is built through
the open source OpenSolaris project.

The first step towards helping you is for you to install the Solaris OS
in one of your machines.

Download and install either Solaris 10 or Solaris Express Developer
Edition.

For installation help and guide, check out:

http://www.blastwave.org/docs/s10u3_howto.html

        OR

http://www.sun.com/software/solaris/howtoguides/installationhowto.jsp#1

You will then get the feel of Solaris and you can move on to other
topics such as installation and configuration of services, etc..

After the successful installation of Solaris in your machine, the
following sites will help you:

(1.) Bigadmin : http://www.sun.com/bigadmin/home/index.html

(2.) The Blog of Ben Rockwood : http://www.cuddletech.com/blog/

(3.) Blastwave.org : http://www.blastwave.org/

(4.) Sunfreeware.com : http://sunfreeware.com/

(5.) OpenSolaris.org itself : http://www.opensolaris.org/os/

Hope that helps.

Solaris Rocks!

Thanking you....
