You are probably either doing NFS v3 or have an older NFS v4 client.
Options:
NFS v3 : Use the automounter and /net
NFS v4 : It just works. I'm running Ubuntu Fiesty Fawn. The rpc.idmapd
warning is bogus.
If it were real, you would see 'nobody' as the owner and group.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ sudo mount -t nfs4 ultralord:/zoo /mnt/ultralord/
Warning: rpc.idmapd appears not to be running.
All uids will be mapped to the nobody uid.
[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~$ ls -al /mnt/ultralord/

OpenSolaris will soon be able to do the same thing with NFSv4 - mirror
mounts will hit the streets along with
the CIFS server. (see http://www.opensolaris.org/os/project/nfs-namespace).
