Hi all,
I tried to install Solaris Express in interactive mode and it failed to load
the GUI: blank monitor, no activity. I installed the os in text mode and
everything went well. When I booted the system, it passed initial loading of
the kernel upon selecting the first entry from the GRUB menu, but again, when
it tried to load the GUI, monitor was reset, became blank and nothing more.
I tried to run Schillix, Belenix and Nexenta from LiveCD and got the same
problem - no GUI can be displayed, it didn't rich the login screen.
I have a 17'' LCD monitor, tried to plug a 15'' CRT monitor, but this didn't
help.
I guess that the problem is related to my Leadtech GeForce 8600GT video card,
specifically to the driver installed for it by default.
I searched the forum and found two topics describing very similar problem
(http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=159251&#159251,
http://www.opensolaris.org/jive/thread.jspa?messageID=137053&#137053), but no
solution was posted there. There was a list of steps to try which started with
disabling the GUI by executing "svcadm disable cde-login". However, being a
pretty newbie Unix user, I don't know how to interrupt the logging process
which goes directly to loading the GUI after selecting an entry in the GRUB
menu. I tried running the failsafe session, but running the above svcadm
command in this mode resulted in "unknown entry cde-login" message.
Unfortunately, I cannot download the Solaris Check Tool at the moment to verify
compatibility of my system with Solaris, so I decided to ask for help here. My
questions are:
Does my problem look to be related to the video card driver? If this is the
case, how can I get to editing the xorg.conf file, that is, to start a consol
session without loading the GUI first?
The configuration of my computer is as follows:
Core2Duo 2,67 GHz
2 Gb of 800 MHz RAM
LeadTech GeForce 8600 GT
Gigabate motherboard (don't remember the exact model, sorry).

Sorry if I missed some obvious things and should be able to find the solution
in this forum. Thank you for reading my long message. I really want to install
and use Solaris OS.
