Hi,

    Some answers to you questions.

firstly, are you really useing a Solaris eXpress Community/Developer
release ?
You should see a message like this when you boot up :

  " Sun Microsystems Inc. SunOS 5.11 snv_72 October 2007 "

1) I have no idea how to get to a desktop, or to know it it was even installed
(err startx didnt work :)

In SXCE the GUI login loads automagically if Solaris recognises you
graphics adaptor. If the gui does not load you have either an
unrecognised
graphics card or a bad/old/wrong devicdriver for you card.

which graphics card do you have ?

2) my nic (ifconfig -a) just shows the loopback

Basically same answer as above. You did not get any networking
questions
during the install phase. this indicates that Solaris did not
recognice you
     Network intercface Card.

Which brand/type NIC do you have ?

3) my command line backspace just moves forward with an H H H etc (can I remap
this?)

      # stty erase '^h'

will do the trick . put this oneliner in your $HOME/.profile file.
