Thanks to a reply from Laszlo (Laca) Peter, PDF files can be merged using a
utility program already included in Solaris:
/usr/sfw/bin/gs -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=foo.pdf -dNOPAUSE -dBATCH \
foo1.pdf foo2.pdf ...
