AFAIK, on Solaris, root can _usually_ only be on whatever one booted from, although boot archives, or early zfs booting (with a small UFS filesystem to get started) might have had a way available to them to switch early on from whatever they booted from to something else for root. But it's not common practice for sure, and I don't know of a way to do it at will, such as in your situation. Not to say that there might not be one, but I have my doubts...
