Andrew, You can turn off the sendmail service on your laptop if you use the common MUA clients (thunderbird, evolution, etc.) which deliver mail directly to the appropriate mail server.
The only drawback for this operation is that you will not get any system emails from services such as "cron". In my system, I routinely replace sendmail with another service (qmail) on my mail servers. I also replace sendmail with a non-daemon based mail service (msmtp from sourceforge) [on my laptops and desktops] since there is no reason to waste resources when it is used so infrequently.
