Hi,

There are several things that must be "right" to make the GUI load.

Lets try to list a few:

     1) you need a supported graphics card.

Any of this lot should work ( this is a list of manpages )

      ati(7), chips(7),
     cirrus(7), cyrix(7), fbdev(7), glide(7), glint(7), i128(7),
     i740(7), i810(7), imstt(7), mga(7), neomagic(7), nsc(7),
     nv(7), r128(7), rendition(7), s3virge(7), siliconmotion(7),
     sis(7), sunbw2(7), suncg14(7), suncg3(7), suncg6(7),
     sunffb(7), sunleo(7), suntcx(7), tdfx(7), tga(7), tri-
     dent(7), tseng(7), v4l(7), vesa(7), vga(7), vmware(7)

   2) You need a normal VGA or DVI monitor

   3) your Graphics card need to be able to read the
Monitors EDID data to adapt to the monitor.
A KVM switch between the PC and the monitor usually prevents
         this from happening.

If the automatic Xorg setup fails you will need to run

/usr/X11/bin/xorgconfig

and answer all the questions on your graphics environment
THis produces the file /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

If (3) above is the cause of you problem

   You will need to run

  /usr/X11/bin/cvt -v -r 1024x768x60 ( -r is for LCD/TFT
screens )

to get the MODELINE for the 1024 times 768 times 60 HZ to be placed
in the screen section of /etc/X11/xorg.conf
