Thanks for on- and offline help! The problem was me being an old Linux-person and to me 'init 6' is exactly identical to 'reboot'. What happened next, I don't know. I do know that all data seemed gone, until I started SXDE again, and exit-ed the installer for a command-line and 'format'. After some lengthy fiddling in there, I actually managed to get the partition layout back using 'verify'->'backup'. Grub is back and offers the choices, old and new. Alas, whatever I try, it would reboot immediately. So I'll google for the update of the boot environment next ... .
Another note (bug/enhancement): live-upgrade inevitably overwrites the MBR. So keep a super-grub CD handy to get back to the original MBR in case of chainloading. Though this was the least problem here: I have it handy anytime.
