1) pray (or wish or whatever) that The Open Group decides to release the source (see http://www.marutan.net/cde/ for more info). I'm hoping for this regardless, as there's a bunch of cool stuff one could do with source for libDtSvc, and some features I'd like to add or see added to dtterm (like the alternate buffer for cursor-addressable apps like vi). 2) do the same as people have done to keep around the Open Look desktop: track down all the files that don't conflict with files that are present once CDE is ripped out, and repackage them for your own future use (non-redistributable for sure!) from the last version for each platform you want (sparc vs x86) that has them. That mostly works, give or take some ToolTalk issues (and whatever other problems I haven't seen yet :-). I'll probably do (2) for myself, and if source becomes available, I expect someone will rebuild it; I expect I'd at least give it a try. Note: unless Sun subsequently released their changes, it would be different, since Sun has a lot of enhancements to theirs, but theirs is AFAIK based on CDE 1.something, while the latest from TOG is 2.something. However, the latter has some of the functionality that Sun added, and maybe some more besides (although some of that depends on Motif, the library and include files for which I suppose would stick around forever due to plenty of not specifically CDE apps that nevertheless use Motif). None of which would be supported unless someone chose to, whether informally or for $$.
