Sorry I don't know how to help. I did the same thing going from snv84 to snv85.
My login works ok system crashes as soon as gnome tries to bring up desktop.
Root login bring up solid blue desktop no icons as soon as launch button is hit
it crashes again. Normal user desktop comes up solid black same symptoms.
Common desktop comes up fine either user. Don't know how to troubleshoot.
