smbios(1M) might do that if your motherboard supports it (a spot-check
on a whitebox amd machine didn't report the serial number, but an
x4200M2 did - ymmv)
Otherwise, I can suggest some manual ways of the OS reporting the serial
number, but these basically involve you opening the computer, manually
writing down the serial number, and storing it in a file on the root
disk - the OS would be able to read that :-)
