eblade,
I originally tried to use the opensolaris live dvd and it would never boot on
my machine, SXCE_89 also failed.
I did however suceed finally getting a functioning Solaris installed:
1. installed 5.10 from the sun website ie Solaris 10 5/08(not the open
solaris.org distro)
-made one big partition using entire disk so i d have lots of room for
slices
2. used the live_upgrade method
http://developers.sun.com/sxde/upgrade_guide.jsp
- so far i have upgraded twice, once to SXCE_89 (which also would not boot
from DVD) and again to SXCE_90 (never tried booting, did lu from mounted .iso
). these DVD distros hate my mb controller apparently, even tho it passes HCL
and is pretty common chip. sigh.
3. install dev tools according to the instructions. ( install_devtools.sh)
you will end up with slightly different distribution but I understand IPS and
ZFS boot will be part of the SXCE pretty soon I think eventually Ill be near
the same functionality as the OS live install, ie boot and data on ZFS slices,
a package manager , etc.
oh yeah, there is major gotcha with live_upgrade, make sure the slices are
flagged "wm" and NOT "wu" . I have absolutely no idea why.
gl.
