I have a fresh install of Opensolaris 2008.05 that I hope to use as a backup
server for several Windows servers. The problem is rsync speeds are roughly 10
times slower than running rsync on a SuSE Linux box with a considerably slower
CPU. I have mounted the Windows shares via mount -F smbfs. The Linux box
mounts the Windows shares using mount.cifs. Both machines are on the same
ethernet switch as the Windows Machine that I am rsyncing with. I have tried
different cables/NICs and even bought a new CPU/motherboard for the Opensolaris
box, which is now an Athlon 64 X2 4800+, but started out as an Athlon XP 2200+.
The Linux box is only an Athlon 1400 XP and has been doing speedy rsyncs for
over a year now.

Normal file copies from the mounted shares seem to be about the same speed on
each box. Running an rsync between the Linux and Opensolaris boxes seems to
run quick.

The switches I use for rsync are "rsync -avvuHS --progress"
