In trying to open a few web pages, I ran into the following problem:

"Java Not Enabled

"Java is not enabled for your browser. Please contact the site helpdesk. "

I looked at my Firefox preference, the "Enable Java" box was clearly checked.

Then I typed in " about:config " in Firefox, it shows that the value for the
entry:

Java, default_java_location_solaris

defaults to " /usr/j2se "

Since there is no /usr/j2se in OS 2008.05, I changed the value to /usr/java.
But it did not help.

I also saw a couple of places which made references to either
/etc/.java/versions or ~/.java/versions, but no java versions' were set up in
OS 2008.05.

Some things seem to have gone embarrassingly wrong regarding the java
environment. This probably explains why there were quite a few java-related
problems such as inability to open java web start pages, my struggle to install
StarSuite8, and perhaps some others.
