Thank you Phi,

I did that, and it's looking good. I'm installing as I write. During boot there 
was a message saying acpi_drv had been disabled and it now boots without the 
panic. I'll do an upgrade and then try to driver. 

A Google showed the acpi driver is about batteries. I have noticed a problem 
with the machine often having no idea what state the battery is in. Sometimes 
it thinks its on mains when it is on battery, sometimes the battery indicator 
shows 90% or so charge and never changes until the battery is really exhausted 
and the hardware cuts off. So its good to see someone has tried to address the 
battery issue, even if, as it appears here, the driver is broken. It's the only 
way to make progress.
