The mistake was already in the Subject: xVM and Virtualbox seem to be virtually exclusive.
Virtualbox only runs when xVM doesn't. The write-up for installing VirtualBox on AMD64 is here: http://forums.virtualbox.org/viewtopic.php?t=8345 Now I am installing ubuntu-8.04-alternate-i386.iso (amd64 doesn't want, but that's minor), and the speed is blazingly fast for a VM.
