You were correct! I followed your instructions and I believe that there
was a problem with the video card. I swapped out the card for another card
(nvidia 9600gt) this time the system made it to loading the LiveCD, but soon as
I plugged in the Ethernet line from the DSL router I got a kernel panic and the
system rebooted.
I reinstalled 2008.05 and tried to upgrade to 2008.11 from there and
it worked without a hitch.
