hi there, after some more searching i found the "sun device detection tool", 
and when i ran it it told me that there was no driver for my graphics card(s)- 
may be that was the issue.  i then decided to install it on another computer 
where there were no driver issues (according to that tool), and- voila- it 
worked fine.
