Problem solved, in extremely bizarre fashion. In order to send a break for kmdb purposes, I unplugged my standard PC keyboard (which was going through a Belkin Switch2 KVM), and plugged in a Sun type 6 keyboard. After rebooting, the system came up without any problems.
