ok... I figured it out.
in /usr/share/mime-info/ms-openxml.keys changed:
<glob pattern="*.xld"/>
<alias type="application/msexcel"/>
to
<glob pattern="*.xld"/>
<glob pattern="*.xlsx"/>
<alias type="application/msexcel"/>
I did that with docx and pptx and then ran update-mime-database /usr/share/mime/
and finally kill nautilus to have it restart again.
I'm now able to preview/double click on ms-openxml files.
