I can't seem to get clear font rendering in 2009.06. I use Microsoft fonts in
Ubuntu, openSUSE, freeBSD, etc. and they are all perfectly clear.

In 2009.06, I use the Gnome desktop and have tried every combination of
hinting, etc. None of the tahoma, arial type fonts work, though helvetica is
usable. Is there any replacement for freetype (like Fedora's
freetype-freeworld) that will help, or any other way to improve the situation?

Thanks.

Don

Yep, I also tried to use Terminus fonts on newly installed OS2009.06 on my home
laptop - and fonts were blurred no matter what I do.

Still - it can be done, since on my work PC with 2008.11 -> 2009.06 upgraded, I
use nice`n`smooth terminus fonts with no blurring.

Problem is - I forgot, how I managed to do this :) Maybe xfontsel shamanism
solved my problems, but I wonder why simple way with ~/.fonts
doesn`t work well...
