Hi Gert,
I think you are seeing the bug 4751. gnome-system-monitor showing
incorrect memory statistics. See
http://defect.opensolaris.org/bz/show_bug.cgi?id=4751
I think you must rely on prstat/vmstat for memory usage details until
the above issue is fixed.

L.S.,
I have just moved over to OpenSolaris from Linux (Ubuntu, SuSE) for doing my
regular (mainly Java and Scala) development work. Although the system seems
to work quite nicely, I do notice a much higher usage of RAM than with my
previous OS when running the same kind of workload. When looking at the gnome
system monitor, I now regularly exceed the 2GB of physical RAM available while
I only had that in Linux when I was really running multiple instances of the
ESB I'm working on or things like that. Even in an idle state, the system uses
over 1GB of RAM.
Now, with OpenSolaris being more geared towards the server, I can imagine there
are services running in the background. Are there services that could/should
be enabled when using the system as a development workstation instead of a
server? Are there any other things I can do to get this issue addressed? You
probably need a lot more information, so just let me know what it is you need
to help me out...
Thanks in advance,
Gert
