My 2c;
I went for 8 GB of ECC ram in my setup - its cheap and you only buy it once so
might get it right up front.
I also went for Seagate drives but after a string of failures would not
recommend them - I've just replaced my latest failed drive (failed refurb which
gives you some idea of how often I'm sending them back to Seagate) with a
slightly more expensive but hopefully better quality Western Digital one.
