X11 mode is normally started by the gdm service, so some places to look
for more details about why it wasn't started include:
svcs -v gdm
/var/log/gdm/:0.log
/var/log/Xorg.0.log

Gdm service was disabled. No indication why.
Re-enabling it brought X11 mode back.
