I got Eclipse downloaded, and it works great. However, it is in my tmp folder.
One minor issue, in Solaris/OpenSolaris the /tmp directory is wiped at
boot time. So if you want to keep your Eclipse stuff, you will have to
move it.
Without knowing what form the Eclipse data is in, it would be difficult
to say how to move it. One or more files in a tar bundle ?
Unix/Linux have standard locations for shared applications
OpenSolaris /opt or the older BSD /usr/local/bin
Linux also uses usr/local/bin
Easy or hard depends on how Eclipse was delivered.
Creating a Gnome desktop Icon is easy... toolbar example but right
click on the background to have it on the screen.
Mouse on top toolbar (blank area) and right click, select "Add to
panel", then click on "Custom Application Launcher". the rest should
be obvious.

You can make a "shortcut" to in similar to in windows and place it on your desktop, but an easier approach may be to add to your menu in Gnome. Here is a guide on how to do so in Gnome. (It's shows doing it in Ubuntu, but Gnome will work the same in Solaris in this regard, so no worries.) I just add Eclipse to my "Programming" menu and its all good.
Also, you might want to think about either dual booting (as recommended above)
or - another super easy option - install Ubuntu inside Virtual Box. Then you
can run Solaris on your notebook and also - simultaneously - run Ubuntu and
flip back and forth. Ubuntu really is an awesome platform to learn on and you
can translate 90% of what you learn right over to Solaris. Well, maybe 80% :)
