I finally found it.
system->preferences->keyboard
- choose the accessibility tab
- At the lower right hand corner of the accessibility panel there
is a button labeled "Audio Feedback...". Click on it
- Near the bottom of the panel that pops up is a section called
"Visual cues for sounds"
