"What kind of application do I run" - none. Seriously, none. OK, not exactly
none, but close enough: a simple cronjob, that wakes up around 2:00 am every
night, and calls a script doing this...

for vmwareMachine in A.vmx B.vmx C.vmx ; do
    # suspend VM
    ssh VMWARE-server 'vmrun...  suspend... /path/to/$vmwareMachine' || error
    rsync --inplace ... /company/backups/VMWARE-server/ || error
    ssh VMWARE-server 'vmrun...  start... /path/to/$vmwareMachine' || error
zfs snapshot company/back...@`date +"%Y%m%d"`

There is no while loop that could explain a fork bomb - the only explanation I
have is one that I really hate - that ZFS keeps eating up memory until the
machine blows up...
