I set up my file server, added two shares and two user groups. I tested my permissions and made sure I had all the right permissions. I did. so when I was done I added a second user using the gui in opensolaris. the new user account I made sure it had the same properties as my account, down to group memberships and everything. now, when I log in with my user account from a windows system it works fine. when I try using the new user account and password, windows throws an error 0x80070043 which seems to indicate that it can't find the share or something like that, it doesn't seem relevant.
