So that's probably a red herring, not a clue to what's gone wrong in my
system, sounds like.

Didn't capture it.  Since it sounds like I'm not hitting a known
situation, I'll dig into this more tonight, and provide exact text of
relevant messages if I don't resolve the problems myself.

Before then; as I remember it there's a graphic screen with a slider
thingy that bounces back and forth for a long time before the gdm login
appears.

As I said, it never got into graphics mode; it's still stuck at the text
console.
