I guess it paniced while trying to mount the root filesystem, because the original device used to access the root filesystem does not exist in the new machine...
This is a good answer when the disk is not virtual the work around is a little more involved. I changed the principle rom player read device in my dell e521 to another hd and lost all zfs boot. That work around turned out to be installing a brand new rom player read/write device. The old one was like dead to zfs or something. Now the system is back up and wobbling again.
